Celexa generic
Generic Celexa (Citalopram) is an antidepressant drug belonging to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) group. It is a prescription medication that helps in treating depression, anxiety and appetite disorders.
Celexa consists of a compound called Paxil or Paroxetine that is solely responsible in decreasing the hot flushes brought about by the hormone therapy of prostate cancer, according to researchers. This antidepressant medication usually comes in pills or tables of 20, 40 or 60 mg.
Celexa helps restore the brain chemical balance by increasing the concentrations of serotonin in the synaptic gap, which in turn helps improve mood. The recommended dose for treating depression with Celexa is from 20 to 60 mg a day, with or without food.
Celexa has numerous side effects on several of the body systems:
- Nervous System: dry mouth, increased sweating, tremor
- Gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Body as a whole: fatigue, fever
- Musculoskeletal: arthralgia (pain in a joint), myalgia (muscle pain)
- Psychiatric Disorders: somnolence, insomnia, anxiety, anorexia, agitation, decreased libido, yawning.
- Respiratory System: upper respiratory tract infection, rhinitis, sinusitis.
- Urogenital: ejaculation disorder, impotence.
Celexa has been proven as effective and well tolerated in clinical trials involving more than 23,000 patients, as well as by a decade of clinical use during which more than eight million people in 64 countries have been treated with Celexa. Results from these trials show that Celexa consistently and significantly decreases symptoms of depression (depending on patients age race or gender). The studies have shown that Celexa is significantly more effective than placebo in preventing relapse of depression.
